About the Artist
Wang Xudong (1938–2026) was born in Longkou, Shandong Province, and devoted over sixty years to Chinese landscape painting — capturing mountains, rivers, and the spirit of the land in ink and brush.
He graduated from the Harbin Academy of Art in 1961, later studied at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, and served for decades as Professor and Director of the Chinese Painting Department at Shandong Art Academy — shaping generations of artists while never ceasing to paint himself.1961年毕业于哈尔滨艺术学院,后入鲁迅美术学院国画高研班深造。
His defining vision — "One Mountain, One River, One Sage" — wove together the grandeur of Mount Tai, the flow of the Yellow River, and the moral weight of Confucian civilization. It became the hallmark of the Qilu painting school he founded.

In Tribute
On April 7, 2026, our province's renowned landscape painter and senior art educator Wang Xudong passed away. I knew him for forty years — teacher and friend both — and the bond between us ran deep. His passing has left me stricken with grief.2026年4月7日,我省著名山水画家、资深美术教育家王旭东先生不幸与世长辞。
Wang Xudong devoted his entire life to the art of Chinese landscape painting, ploughing deep into the cultural territory of Qilu. He always worked around the creative core of "One Mountain, One River, One Sage" — drawing mountains and rivers in ink, nurturing younger artists with the virtue of a true teacher. He was honest and sincere, rigorous in scholarship, upright and grand in his painting style.
He was rooted in Qilu and his heart was tied to his native soil. Detached from worldly fame, devoted wholly to his art, he poured his life's blood into the inheritance of Qilu landscape painting and the cause of art education. His passing is a great loss to Shandong's art and education communities.
His creative philosophy was simple and absolute: "Leave no inferior work in the world." For six decades he held to this standard — climbing Mount Tai before dawn to witness the sunrise, traveling the length of the Yellow River to feel its weight, returning again and again to Qufu to absorb the spirit of Confucius. Every painting was an act of devotion.
Mount Tai still stands majestic. The springs of Jinan still flow with grace. The Yellow River still surges onward. The cultural vein of Qilu passes from generation to generation. Shandong's art world will forever remember this great landscape master.
Wang Xudong, rest in eternal peace.
